1788    Virginia admitted to the Union as 10th State.

1791    District of Columbia (Federal) created from lands ceded by
        Virginia and Maryland.

1846    Lands ceded to the District of Columbia (Federal)
        by Virginia are returned.

1863    West Virginia separates from Virginia.
