1803 Majority of MT included in the Louisiana Purchase from France.
1804 Louisiana Purchase organized into the "District of Louisiana" and the
Territory of Orleans (Louisiana).
1805 "District of Louisiana" reorganized as Territory of Louisiana.
1812 Territory of Louisiana reorganized into Missouri Territory (aka The Indian Country).
1818 Treaty with Great Britain sets Northern border at 49 degrees North.
1853 Washington Territory (Washington, Northern Idaho and NorthWest
Montana) created from Oregon Territory.
1854 Nebraska Territory (Nebraska, NorthEast/NorthCentral Colorado, majority of
Wyoming, WestCentral So.Dakota, Western No.Dakota and majority of Montana)
created from the Missouri Territory.
1861 Nebraska Territory reorganized, WestCentral So.Dakota, Western No.Dakota,
North half of Wyoming, and majority of Montana added to the Dakota Territory.
1863 Idaho Territory (Idaho, Western Montana and WestCentral Wyoming) created from
the Washington Territory.
1863 Dakota Territory reorganized, majority of Montana added to the Idaho Territory.
1864 Montana Territory (Montana) created from Idaho Territory.
1889 Montana admitted to the Union as 41st State.
