1848 Treaty with Mexico transfers lands North of the Gila
River (Ariz.) to the U.S. consisting of California, Nevada, Utah,
Western Colorado and New Mexico.
1850 New Mexico Territory (Western New Mexico, Arizona and
Nevada-South of 36 degrees 30 min) organized.
1853 Gadsden Purchase from Mexico (Southern Arizona and New Mexico),
added to the New Mexico Territory.
1863 Arizona Territory (Arizona) created from New Mexico Territory.
1912 Arizona admitted to the Union as 48th State.
